Last call for British Underwater Image Festival 2008 entries
January 31, 2008 is the deadline for entries to be received for the 2008 British Underwater Image Festival. The festival has Open, Young Photographer (under-30), Digital Compact, and Portfolio categories for still photography, and Documentary-style and Open categories for video. The winners of the festival are presented on March 14-16 at the Birmingham NEC as part of the Go Diving! show.

Brian Skerry interviewed in American Photo Magazine
Professional photographer Brian Skerry was interviewed for this month’s edition of ‘Behind the Lens’ in American Photo Magazine. Skerry, who has worked primarily with National Geographic, talks about his introduction to underwater photography and how he began shooting professionally, and ends with a few recommendations for aspiring photographers.

Canon announces EOS 450D/Digital Rebel XSi, new telephoto lenses
Canon today announced the 12.2MP EOS 450D/Digital Rebel XSi, the replacement to the Canon 400D/Digital Rebel XTi. The 1.6x crop camera features a 14-bit CMOS sensor, 3.5fps, a 3” LCD, and Live View shooting (with autofocus in this mode). The camera will retail in April for USD$799.
Also introduced are new telephoto and super-telephoto lenses: the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM and the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM, with the latter sized the same as Canon’s 600mm f/4L, but weighing nearly 2lbs less. The lenses come in at hefty retail prices, USD$5,999 and USD$11,999, respectively, and are expected to be available in Spring 2008.
Wetpixel target of DoS attack, back online
Wetpixel is back online after being down intermittently for the majority of last night. Our host tells us that we are the target of a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. We are working hard to restore functionality, and apologize for any inconvenience!
Panasonic SDR-SW20 underwater camcorder reviewed
The Panasonic SDR-SW20, the company’s first “dive” camcorder, was recently reviewed by CamcorderInfo. The SDR-SW20, like the Sanyo Xacti E1, is only waterproof to 5 feet, and the video quality is “pale, noisy, and bad with motion,” but the camera is praised for its “rugged, shock, and dust-proof body.”
While we don’t recommend investing in a housing, this is a good effort by Panasonic to provide a camera to throw in the dive bag and not worry about getting wet on your next dive trip.

H2O Photo Pros Underwater Photo & Video has announced the opening of a new store for underwater imaging in Newport Beach, California. Owned by Mike Luzansky, H2O Photo Pros is an authorized dealer for manufacturers including Gates, Sea & Sea, Light & Motion, Aquatica, and Ikelite, and the store location features Apple editing stations and flat-screen televisions for display of underwater footage.

Tim Rock authors photography, Lonely Planet books
Wetpixel member Tim Rock is proud to announce the recent publishing of four of his books, the first of which is a 300-photograph hard-cover volume “of the people, culture, nature, and marine world of Yap in Micronesia,” titled “Yap - Micronesian Magic.” The book follows large format landscape style, and is sized at 192 13” by 11” pages.
Also available are three books in the Lonely Planet Diving and Snorkeling series: D&S Thailand, D&S Belize, and D&S Cayman islands, all featuring full-color imagery and providing information on “unique sites from each of these hotbed diving destinations.” Congratulations, Tim!
