Activists take legal action to prevent mining on Bangka

Off the north end of Sulawesi Island in the Coral Triangle lies Bangka. Bangka borders a marine park that contains two world famous dive sites, Bunaken and Lembeh. This tiny island is at the heart of a conflict between a mining company hoping to extract iron ore and activists and dive operators who say that the impact to the surrounding coral reefs would be devastating.

Under Indonesian law, mining of an island this size is illegal, however, locals have captured footage showing excavation for mine extraction taking place.
