Images show a perfectly preserved shipwreck nearly 300 feet below Lake Superior

Gunilda

Images published this week on Yahoo show a perfectly preserved shipwreck, the Gunilda, that has been resting 270 feet below the surface of Lake Superior for 107 years. The images were captured by Becky Kagan Schott, underwater photographer and technical diving instructor, over the course of 25 dives to the extreme depth. The preservation of the ship and expert lighting make for a stunning combination.

This is what Schott had to say about the images:

I’ve never seen anything like it in all my years of shipwreck diving. For me it was almost surreal being there. I’d dreamed of seeing this shipwreck and it took years of experience both in diving and photography to be able to safely capture the images I saw in my mind.
