A paper published in the “Regional Studies in Marine Science” has emphasized how the combination of social media, underwater photography and citizen science can provide insights into the study of the marine environment.

The article, entitled “A curious association between two small fish species, Lepadogaster candolii Risso, 1810 and Parablennius rouxi (Cocco, 1833), and Muraena helena (Linnaeus, 1758) coming from citizen science,” documents previously unknown interactions between the Mediterranean moray, (Muraena helena) and two small cryptobenthinc fish; Lepadogaster candolii and Parablennius rouxi. The new behaviors were first observed by divers and then documented in images that were discovered in images shared via social media and other websites.
