Nikon Rumors has reported that Nikon is developing a “serious” underwater camera. The article speculates that this may be a part of the Nikon 1 line, and that the plans are for a Nikonos-like dedicated underwater camera with an ability to go to 6-100 ft (20-30 m).

It is now a historical fact that there were some Nikonos camera converted to a digital format by Kodak for military applications. Whilst I doubt that the new camera will lean as heavily on the Nikonos design and pedigree, it is interesting that Nikon has identified the underwater market as being of potential commercial interest.
