Winners of National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year contest announced

National Geographic has announced the winners of their Nature Photographer of the Year 2017 photo contest. Selected from more than 11,000 entries, the grand prize winner is Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan with his image of an orangutan submerged in water while crossing a river in Borneo. Began won $7,500 US and will have his image published in a future issue of National Geographic magazine. First place in the underwater category went to Jim Obester for his image of a tube dwelling anemone.

National Geographic outs shark image hoax

A digitally manipulated image of a great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) apparently breaching is the subject of an elaborate hoax. An individual going by the name of Bob Burton, is claiming to be a National Geographic magazine’s “chief” photographer and that the image is National Geographic’s “photo of the year”. How whale species are adapting to changing ice in the Antarctic

National Geographic has just published an article that follows scientists through Antarctic waters as they try to determine how whale species are adapting to less ice and warmer temperatures. National Geographic Explorer Ari Friedlaender, of Oregon State University, is in the Antarctic to study humpback whales and Antarctic minke whales. The population of minke whales, who depend on sea ice for survival, has dropped while the population of humpback whales, who thrive in open ocean, have grown significantly.

There are four categories (animal portraits, landscape, action, and environmental issues) that will have three (3) winners each. Grand Prize is a 10-day trip for two to the Galapagos Islands.

National Geographic launches its Summer of Sharks

National Geographic Magazine has kicked off their “Summer of Sharks”. The June 2016 issue features an article about diving wth tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) at Tiger Beach. Forthcoming issue over the summer will feature great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) and oceanic whitetips (Carcharhinus longimanus).

Call for Entries: 2015 National Geographic Photo Contest

The 2015 National Geographic Photo Contest is calling for entries. Categories include People, Places, and Nature. The grand-prize winner will receive $10,000 and a three-day trip to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual National Geographic Photography Seminar in January 2016. The deadline for submissions is 16 November 2016.
