Communities agree further MPA in Raja Ampat

In a ceremony, community officials from the villages of Pam, Saukabu, and Saupapir in the Fam (locally Pam) Archipelago of Raja Ampat signed an agreement to protect their waters with the provision of a Marine Protected Area (MPA). This agreement will now move forward through the legal process. Thereafter, the MPA can be formally declared and join the other 5 that are already established within Raja Ampat.

Cruise Ship owners fined for reef damage

The operators of the cruise ship that struck the reef at Crossover off Kri, Raja Ampat in March have been fined Rp6 trillion (around US$450 million) according to Tempo. The Indonesian government is seeking this sum from the owners of the Caledonian Sky basing its calculation on four components to damages: ecosystem, economy and society, ecosystem rehabilitation costs and damage claim costs.

The 2017 Raja Ampat Underwater Photo Contest is calling for entries. The wide angle category is free for up to 5 entries, which must have been taken in the Raja Ampat region between August 2016 and August 2017. The contest has also added a new macro category that is only open to individuals who have booked onto several mandatory trips with the contest’s sponsor. The deadline for entries is 31 August 2017.

Recovery of Raja Ampat reef damaged by cruise ship up to 100 years

As divers begin to assess the damage sustained to a Raja Ampat reef destroyed two-weeks ago by a cruise ship, the full extent of the reef destruction is coming into focus. On March 4th, the Caledonian Sky went off course after taking tourists on a bird-watching cruise and ran aground into one of Raja Ampat’s famously pristine reefs. The reef is irreparably damaged and could take up to “100 years” to recover.
