Using exploding jellyfish populations to make biodegradable diapers

Overfishing of commercial fish stocks and removal of top predators worldwide have caused the populations of jellyfish worldwide to skyrocket. Jellyfish blooms can be problematic for a number of reasons including clogging intake valves and taking over swimming areas. Scientists believe we will see jellyfish blooms more and more in coming years. Now one startup has come up with a product to make use of the overabundant jellies, diapers.

Cine’al has come up with a product made from jellyfish material called Hydromash. The Hydromash has the stinging property removed, absorbs a remarkable amount of water and is also biodegradable. Over 40 million diapers are thrown into landfills each day in the US alone. This product is a potential solution to two enormous problems.

The company is a startup based out of Tel Aviv and hopes to have their product on the market in the next year and a half.
