The image that won the Animals in their Environment category of the 2017 Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPOTY) has been disqualified. The image, taken by Marcio Cabral in Brazil’s Emas National Park, won the Animals in their Environment category of the contest in 2017. It purports to show an anteater moving towards a termite mound but seems to have been staged using a taxidermically stuffed animal.
According to The Independent the RAW files taken by the photographer before and after the winning shot did not show an animal. The photographer strongly denies that the photograph was staged.
